]]>Professor of Earth Sciences and Biological Sciences, Dr. Jan Amend, passed away unexpectedly on February 1, 2024. Jan Amend’s legacy will be multifaceted. His science was very unique, and constitutes a fundamental shift in our understanding of the thermodynamics of life in the environment. In addition to his science, Jan was a tremendous advocate and facilitator for countless scientists, young and not so young, as well as the field of geobiology in general. As the leader of several key institutes (C-DEBI, Astrobiology Institute, etc.) and more recently, the associate dean of life sciences in Dornsife, he facilitated the growth of geobiology at USC and across the globe.
We send our condolences to Jan’s family and to the geobioligic community at large.

]]>Recent alum Alison Cribb has been named an 1851 Research Fellow and is conducting exciting research at the University of Southampton. The prestigious fellowship is awarded by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 in an effort to support early career scientists with exceptional promise. Dr. Cribb’s research in palaeoceanography and palaeoclimatology utilizes the fossil record to reconstruct the evolution and impact of marine ecosystem engineers, which can help us understand current and future ecosystem responses to global warming.

]]>Caroline Seyler will join the Department of Earth Sciences at USC in January 2024. Seyler received her Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from McGill University in 2021 and has since been a postdoc at the University of Texas and an NSF postdoctoral fellow at the University of Minnesota.
She is interested in the deformation of rocks at tectonic plate boundaries from fast earthquakes to slow creep. Seyler’s work focuses on the rheology of faults and shear zones using a combination of field, experimental, and microanalytical methods to determine how deformation mechanisms operating at the atomic scale control plate tectonics and influence seismic hazards.

]]>For more than 30 years, the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) and the Department of Earth Sciences have been a powerhouse for Earthquake Science at USC. The Great ShakeOut, the largest disaster drill in U.S. history, originated at USC and is coordinated on a global scale by SCEC. Professor of Earth Sciences and Director of SCEC, Yehuda Ben-Zion, recently announced the transformation of SCEC to a Statewide Center supported by NSF, USGS, and other partners. Our faculty, students, and other earthquake professionals participate in a range of projects in California’s natural laboratory to improve the predictability and understanding of earthquake system models and their uncertainties.

]]>The USC Urban Trees Initiative, featured here by USC Dornsife Public Exchange, is a research effort led by Earth Sciences Professor Will Berelson in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works and the Amigos Nursery. The Initiative assesses the impact of different tree species on air quality to inform leaders on what to plant and where in an effort to create an equitable and resilient urban forest.
Prof. Berelson was recently appointed as the Paxson H. Offield Professor in Coastal and Marine Systems in reflection of his academic distinction.
