Research at the USC Paleo LabMembers of the USC Paleo Lab study the ecological and evolutionary history of life from the Precambrian origin of animals to the modern, using paleoecological, paleobiological and geochemical approaches. Within this broad geobiological subject, lab members are currently focused on important phenomena in the mid-Phanerozoic, including mechanisms for the end-Permian mass extinction, recovery from this mass extinction, and the Mesozoic evolution of birds and dinosaurs. The other focus of current studies in the lab is towards understanding the ecological and evolutionary context for early animals in the Neoproterozoic and Cambrian, including the Cambrian explosion.
