GRADUATE STUDENTS

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

I am always interested in working with highly motivated students who share my enthusiasm for trying to understand plate boundary deformation through geologic and geophysical field work. Sense of humor a must. Seriously.

Please feel free to contact me by email or phone. I am always happy to talk to prospective students, particularly if you have your own ideas as to what kind of research you want to pursue.

It is our policy to guarantee 5 years of funding (combination of research and teaching assistantships) for all doctoral students accepted to the program.

Graduate School Application

I am strongly committed to involving undergraduate students directly in our research projects. All of our projects ultimately deal in one form or another with seismic hazards, and the societal relevance of this research appeals to many undergraduate interns (it also looks great on your resume).

I typically mentor one to three undergraduate interns each summer, as well as supervising one or two senior thesis projects per year. There are two main funding sources for these summer internships, the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) internship offered by the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC), and the Earth Sciences Research Apprenticeship Program (ESRAP) offered by the USC Department of Earth Sciences. Both of these programs provide a generous summer stipend for undergraduate interns. Both programs also allow the interns to present their findings publically (SCEC interns at the SCEC annual meeting), and the ESRAP interns at USC’s undergraduate research day.
