I've had several people ask about the earthquake in Virginia today. I talked about it briefly with my advisor, Dr. Jordan. Here is the 2008 seismic hazard map for the east coast. For those not familiar with these maps, it shows the ground motion they expect that has only a 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years (2008 to 2058). These is a blob in Virginia called the Central Virginia Seimic Zone and this is where today's earthquake occurred. I also found this easy-to-read government report on seismic hazard in Virginia. June 23, 2011 :

Dr. Jordan just announced this summer's "Grand Challange" for the SCEC USEIT interns! They're going to take the space-time plots that I've been making for large earthquake sequences and integrate them into SCEC-VDO so that we can have a real-time, 3-D version of the plots to monitor the activity and progression of the aftershock sequence! I'm excited to see this evolve over the summer!
