The laboratory is equipped with four light stable isotope ratio mass spectrometers. This includes one Thermo Scientific Delta Advantage, two Micromass Isoprimes and one VG Instruments Prism II.
Two of the IRMS instruments are coupled to high temperature EAs for pyrolysis. These instruments measure δ18O and δD from a variety of compounds.
One of the IRMS instruments is equipped with a low temperature EA for combustion and measurements of δ13C and δ15N.
Two of the IRMS instruments are equipped with dual inlet. The Isoprime (see below) with multiprep is used to measure δ18O and δ13C of carbonates via acidification.
The Lab is also equipped with a JY Instrument Inductively Coupled Atomic Emission Spectrometer for elemental measurements and a
Picarro Ring Down Cavity Spectrometer for stable isotope measurements of δ18O and δD on water samples
We use this instrument for measuring δ18O and δD in cellulose extracted from trees to reconstruct the isotope composition of precipitation, which gives the cellulose its distinct δ18O and δD
Equipped with microvolume CO2 cold finger and autoprep device for individual acid injections for small (down to 10mg CaCO3) carbonate δ18O and δ13C analyses or for CO2/H20 water equilibrations
configured with continuous flow and EA front-end for flash combustions of organic samples for δ13C and δ15N measurements
light stable isotope mass spectrometer equipped with electromagnet, dual inlet and micro volume cold fingers for CO2 and N2. There is also a H/D spur.
Samples are analyzed via manifold with break-seal cracker or via common acid carbonate preparation device for δ13C and δ18O.
Samples as small as 15ug CaCO3 can be run routinely on this instrument. The large diffusion pump and open framework of the analyzer accommodate very small gas samples with no memory or carryover.
Inductively Coupled Atomic Emission Spectrometer
This is the Jobin Yvon ICP-AES instrument. It is used for elemental analyses.
This instrument is equipped with both polychromater and monochromater. The polychromator allows for simultaneous measurement of various elements such as Mg and Ca in carbonates.
