My research group pursues structural geology, tectonics, and igneous and metamorphic petrology with the main goal of understanding “hot” continental margin orogens and their accompanying magmatic systems. We employ modern field mapping techniques and the application of structural and petrological techniques to the study of both magmatic systems and their host rocks and work closely with petrologists, geochemists, and geochronologists. We use strain analyses, microstructural studies, and collaborative modeling studies when applicable to certain projects. Many of these projects occur in the well-exposed North American Cordillera: others involve a number of active and past international projects. We welcome further international collaborations. I welcome inquiries from potential graduate students (paterson@usc.edu, USC Earth Sciences department website). A number of undergraduate research opportunities also exist in California and internationally.
